what should i buy if i’m looking for a white noise maker?

i’m looking for a white noise maker that is not very expensive and has nature sounds any suggestions of what i should buy?

I recommend that you don’t buy a white noise maker machine, they can cost more money than the a CD. You could use an existing CD player or rip the CD and put it in your ipod or computer. I hope that helps.

Your White Noise Maker -The Science Behind It

If you are considering the purchase of a white noise maker, you may wonder about the science behind it and how it works. White noise machines are nothing new but the applications for them are increasing as people find more uses for them. The principle behind the white noise maker is somewhat complex but after reading this article, hopefully you will have a better idea of what white noise technology really is and just why those white noise machines are so effective.

The two most common uses for white noise sound machines are to mask outside or interfering noises as well as to keep some sound, more specifically some conversations, relatively private in nature by making it more difficult for passers-by to eavesdrop. Another very common use of white noise sound technology is to disseminate a sort of sound “shield” that blocks most unwanted sounds from your hearing so that you are not disturbed while you rest and relax.

The success of the white noise maker depends on the white noise technology so that is what needs to be understood when you are trying to figure out how such an innocuous device could really be so functional. Noise or sound travels in waves just the same as electrical current and light do. Those sound waves have certain bandwidths or frequencies. A complete lack of any sound waves would of course result in silence whereas the inclusion of all of the different sound waves or sound frequencies would be what is commonly referred to as white noise.

White noise is very simply small sounds from every frequency range all being played at once. While it may sound chaotic in theory, the actual sound itself is much more subtle and not nearly as offensive as the explanation may make it seem. The white noise sound machine plays a combination of all these sounds together in order to drown out unwanted noises.

When people are speaking, there are minor differences in the frequencies that they use when talking. On the surface, the tonal qualities may seem minor but on a deeper level, this is also what helps you to recognize sounds and even individual voices. If there were ten or even one hundred people all speaking at once, you would be hard pressed to understand any of what was being said. In effect, this is the principle behind the sound noise machines.

By playing so many sound frequencies all at the same time, the white noise sound machine makes it difficult for the casual passer-by to understand any of the conversation that is going on. It takes effort to separate one voice from many, especially in passing. This is perhaps the greatest reason for the increase in popularity of white noise machines in professional offices.

From the person in the cubicle to the doctor speaking with their patient, any time that the conversations are important and distractions can be disastrous; the white noise sound machine can help to insure at least a sense of privacy. For blocking out unwanted sounds at night or when relaxing, the principle remains the same. The combination of noises covers up or masks unwanted sounds allowing the listener or user of the white noise generator to sleep better and get more rest in the same amount of time.
